So often we get so caught up in the technical side of Internet marketing, the SEO, website design, adwords campaigns and the other dozens of parts that make up a successful online business that we forget about what really makes an it all work.

Here’s a story that can put things in better perspective…

The Plot

Have you heard the story about the farmer and the preacher? Yes, I know this story can just as well be about the Internet Marketer Guru and the “newbie” (and it is) but let’s stick with the original story line.

Well one day a preacher was driving down a country road when he drove by one of the nicest looking farms he’d ever seen. It was a beautiful field of robust crops all in perfectly straight lines. The picturesque red barn and stately farmhouse were surrounded by rows of tall trees and colorful flowers. Plump cattle and horses grazed in the pasture.

Having been raised on a farm himself, the preacher had to stop a moment and take everything in.

As he did, he noticed the farmer nearby driving his tractor and waived him over to his car. The farmer drove over to the car, got down from his tractor and pleasantly greeted the preacher. The preacher then began to tell the farmer how beautiful he thought his farm was and how God must have really blessed him.

The farmer tilted his head, shuffled his feet, and with a smile said, “Yeah, God has blessed me but you should have seen it when He had it all to himself!”

The preacher nodded and smiled as he shook the farmer’s hand, got back in his car and continued his journey down the road. And then it dawned on him that he now had his message for next Sunday’s sermon.

The Insight

So what does this have to do with Internet Marketing you might ask?

Every farmer, well let’s now call him Internet marketer, travels this road and is blessed with the same degree of opportunity. Yes, the same Internet marketing opportunity. Every successful Internet entrepreneur has worked his website “field” very hard and has done so with a belief that he too can be a success.

It’s important to know that in your online business, your website, your blog posts, and your products are a reflection of your own “farm” (your mindset). Successful Internet entrepreneurs understand that the “land” or opportunity we’re given is not just the website, its design, formatting, bells and whistles but also the value we offer to our subscribers and the efforts we are willing to put forth to build our dreams for our business.

Our online businesses are our plots of ground and that’s the land we work from which we are then enabled to reap and enjoy our harvest, our income streams. And the way we’ve sewn our “field” will be reflected in every department of our lives.

Think about this – we, like the farmer can have a bountiful harvest, not just when the crops are actually harvested but every time we look our at our “farm”, every time we look at our fields full of robust life, our cattle and horses grazing peacefully in the fields and our stately farmhouse surrounded by rows of tall trees and colorful flowers. Yes, the farmer was thankful for what he had but he knew that it was not what is given to us that makes the difference, but rather what we do with it, what we make of what we have that really counts.

Every one of us is a farmer. Our Internet business, actually our lives are the plots of land, the farm ground – the opportunity that has been given to us, all free and clear. If we’re wise, we too will reap the bountiful harvest, for the planting is left strictly to us.
